CONFIGURATION AND FUNCTION
A wind turbine should convert wind energy to electrical energy with a high efficiency, which is relative to the laws of physics (Betz Limit), size constraints and local conditions.
Based on the wind potential of the intended location a wind turbine with suitable power to wind speed characteristic must be chosen.
The productivity will be much higher when the power to wind speed characteristic is similar to the local profile of wind speed.
As an example - the figure beside shows that it is not useful to install a wind turbine for a wind speed of 10m/s and more, when the local profile is significantly lower.
Essential components of a small wind turbine are wind rotor, direct driven generator without cogging, stable yawing system, mast fundamentals and an inverter inclusive of power electronics to feed into the public power grid and to start or stop the wind turbine.
